iPhone Photos and HEIC Compatibility

WellTechFinds accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP and TIFF files. It does not currently accept HEIC or HEIF files. iPhone and iPad photos may be JPEG or HEIC depending on the device, its camera settings, and how the photo was transferred. For supported files, camera orientation is applied before resizing and export.

Check the file on your PC

Check the filename extension in File Explorer. You can add files ending in .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp, .avif, .bmp, .tif, or .tiff directly. Files ending in .heic or .heif need to be converted first.

Apple devices that can capture HEIF include iPhone 7 or later and supported newer iPad models running iOS or iPadOS 11 or later. Older devices may still contain HEIF photos received from another device, so the extension is a more reliable check than the device model. See Apple's HEIF and HEVC guidance.

Use JPEG for future photos

  1. On a supported iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Camera → Formats.
  2. Tap Most Compatible.

New photos taken with the Camera app will use JPEG for still images. This does not convert HEIC photos that already exist.

Convert an existing HEIC photo

Open the HEIC photo in an app that can display it, then choose Save as or Export to create a JPEG or PNG copy. After conversion, confirm the new filename ends in .jpg, .jpeg, or .png before adding it to WellTechFinds. JPEG conversion is lossy, so use a high-quality setting and inspect important images after conversion.

iMazing Converter is advertised by its developer as a free HEIC-to-JPEG/PNG converter for Mac and PC. It lets you choose output quality and whether to preserve EXIF metadata. Review its current licence terms if you use it in a business environment.

About Windows HEIF extensions

Microsoft offers HEIF and HEVC extensions for compatible Windows apps. Availability and pricing vary by region. Installing them may let Windows Photos display an HEIC file, but it does not make HEIC a supported WellTechFinds input. You still need to save or export a JPEG or PNG copy first.

Live Photos and Portrait Mode

A JPEG copy contains a still image. Motion from a Live Photo and editable depth information from Portrait Mode are not carried into a normal JPEG export. Keep the original HEIC/HEIF asset if you may need those features later.
